Who Can Join Chapter 48?

Chapter 48's official name is the Milwaukee Retiree Association Chapter 48 AFSCME.

All retirees and spouses from the various employers who participate in the City of Milwaukee Pension Plan (ERS) are eligible for membership. This includes former management, union and non-represented retirees and their spouses.

The ERS agencies are: City of Milwaukee (including Fire and Police), Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Housing Authority of Milwaukee, Redevelopment Authority of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the Wisconsin Center District.

MRA Chapter 48 AFSCME is administered by an 11-member Board of Directors who are elected by the membership. A representative of Sub-Chapter 36 holds a non-voting position on the Board. There are two membership meetings, with lunch, held each year, one in spring and one in fall. Members are notified of these meetings in the Newsletter.

MRA Chapter 48 has been representing its members for over 50 years. We have successfully fought for pension catch-up adjustments, obtained a permanent cost-of-living adjustment and negotiated the retiree portion of the Global Pension Settlement. We also work with the City to reduce/control health insurance costs.

Our Association is proactive. We monitor the activities of the City of Milwaukee Common Council; Mayor; Pension Board; Employee Benefits; and county, state and federal legislatures. We consider the impact of changes in benefits and increased costs for retirees. We explain the impact these changes can have on retirees and suggest alternatives that may be available.
